Warsaw Band “Rumor” suspension statement

Przepraszamy, ten wpis jest dostępny tylko w języku English.

At TNM 2026, the decision has been made to suspend the Warsaw band Rumor from the network for a period of two years. The suspension entails a disinvitation from TNM gatherings and removal from all communication channels.

The suspension comes as a result of one of Rumor’s members participating in a violent physical assault on a squat in which members of another RoR band were residents, resulting in serious risk of bodily harm and their eviction. Rumor refused to draw any consequences from the offender’s actions, creating an unsafe environment for other RoRies.

During the two-year suspension period, network-wide guidelines and procedures will be developed to deal with cases of ethical and safety breaches such as this, which will be applied to Rumor’s case, with the possibility of permanent exclusion from the RoR network.

Background
Originally, RoR Warsaw was one band, rehearsing at the Przychodnia squat – one of the two largest squats in Warsaw, alongside the neighboring Syrena. An incident involving Przychodnia’s perceived poor response to a sexual assault occurring at the squat made some band members felt unsafe, and prompted them to abandon the space, forming Sambrokato. Others, more closely connected to Przychodnia’s structures, minimized the issue and stayed, creating Rumor. Sambrokato kept close ties with Syrena (some members being permanent residents there), while Rumor kept rehearsing at Przychodnia. The two bands still played together on demos and remained on speaking terms despite their differences.
Main incident

Two years later, a conflict has built up between Przychodnia and Syrena – the flashpoint was an activist from Belarus (“D.”) living in Syrena, who has repeatedly acted aggressively towards other tenants, making them afraid for their safety. Attempts at solving the issue made over several months failed, and he was finally asked to leave. D. had personal connections to Przychodnia residents, who accused Syrena of classism, xenophobia and behaving like landlords.

On December 5th 2021, D. refused to leave the squat and was forcibly escorted out. In response, a large group of Przychodnia residents launched an assault on Syrena – cutting the fence, throwing rocks, bricks, bottles and firecrackers at the building, smashing windows and breaking down doors with axes. Several people were injured, including one person hospitalized with skull fractures, the squat was plundered and all residents permanently evicted. Przychodnia took control of the space, holding it to this day. One of the members of Rumor (B.) was seen physically participating in the attack by members of Sambrokato present in Syrena at the time.

Following Syrena’s eviction, Sambrokato demanded B.’s suspension or removal from Rumor, as physically assaulting and evicting other RoRies was clearly an unacceptable breach, creating an unsafe environment within the network. Rumor refused, insisting that they will handle the matter internally. Attempts at mediation involving other Polish RoR bands resulted in one meeting, but were ultimately unsuccessful, as Rumor eventually stopped responding to requests for further talks. This impasse led to a frozen conflict and strict division of RoR activity in the city, with the two bands avoiding each other at demos.

Fallout
The people present at Syrena during the attack were left traumatized, lost their homes and posessions, as well as an important space for activism. A few Sambrokato members moved cities or left RoR altogether because of the conflict. With time, as the unwillingness of Rumor to take accountability became obvious, most Polish RoR bands decided to stop playing with them. No apologies or serious attempts at reparative action were made by either B. or Rumor as a whole since.
